The

Sauron

Project

A scholarly project focused on the character ‘Sauron’ in the works of J. R. R. Tolkien through the lens of perception.

The Sauron Project is the work of Tolkien scholar Cameron Bourquein. This project consists of three phases aligned with three directions of perception: how Tolkien might have perceived Sauron, how Sauron perceives the world, and how fans perceive (or don’t perceive) him. Phases I and II consider the characterization and development of Sauron across Tolkien’s lifetime as well as Sauron’s intersections with the metaphysics of Tolkien’s Legendarium. The upcoming Phase III of this project will consist of reception and fandom studies centered on Sauron and will include one or more fan surveys. If you are familiar with Tolkien’s Legendarium either through his original works or adaptations and are interested in participating in these surveys when Phase III goes live, please sign up for our mailing list below to receive updates.
